Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo - The Sentinel Dr Jyotsna Bhattacharjee (The writer is a former HoD, Philosophy, Cotton College, Guwahati)
Sri Aurobindo’s magnetic personality, profound knowledge and the vast literature he produced, combined to win over a large number of disciples, who are still spreading his message to humanity.
Aurobindo studied western philosophy and literature at a very early age and was well-acquainted with some of the Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. He had also studied the idealistic  philosophies of recent times. He was greatly influenced by the views of Hegel, Whitehead and Bergson. He also studied the ancient Indian Philosophy and was greatly influenced by Vedanta and Yoga. But he relied chiefly on his own vision, contemplation and reason. It appears that Aurobindo reviewed and reorganized all the views that influenced him and brought out a new, synthetic and comprehensive vision of Reality. …
Ancient Indian philosophy, especially the Vedanta, has made the mistake of rejecting matter. But it must be admitted that every evolution must have a corresponding involution. Aurobindo tried to work out an integral view in which both matter and spirit are given place.
The guiding principle of Sri Aurobindo’s metaphysics appears to be a spirit of reconciliation. He conceived Reality as supremely spiritual and yet managed to give Matter a place in it.
I was born in Orissa, a predominantly Hindu state. But my biggest influence was my father, great poet in Oriya language. He was very otherworldly and innocent, preoccupied by poetry. He never survived in jobs because he was defiantly anti-establishment, always questioning authority and so on. He went through his own turmoil. He first decided to give up his sacred thread. Then he decided to give up any Hindu worship of idols or temples. Then around the age of 50, he decided to convert to Buddhism, giving up his Kshatryia heritage, with its embrace of the sword. But he did not share that part of his life with us and did not give us a religious orientation. Besides, he was also an admirer of Jesus, of Sri Aurobindo and Ma, and others. So I grew up in both a religious variety and vacuum. [Literature and Social Reform in Colonial OrissaGender and Cultural Identity in Colonial Orissa Sachidananda Mohanty]

Word of these elders is not a gospel

Re: Sraddhalu Ranade ...Manoj Das’s Disastrous Advice Sat 21 Aug 2010 11:57 AM IST |  Profile |  Permanent Link
Henceforth I openly challenge anyone who has the conviction of truth about what he is saying or doing to come out and discuss each and every aspect of this episode in the open, in presence of the members, in the Ashram Theatre or the Playground. Let the truth come out. In any case, let me emphasize that the word of these elders is not a gospel, that they are forever right! It is imbecility to believe this. All of us are fallible but when a crisis keeps returning to a group then one must ponder if all is well and right with its leaders and not thrusting the blame on those who have observed somethig different than what they are doing. That would be courage, and with such courage would come wisdom; it cannot come by proclaiming a holy birthright. Alok Pandey 3:15 PM

As most of your discussion on pages 4 and 5 seem to be based on the same misunderstanding of my motives, I pass to your discussion of my reading of Sri Aurobindo's plays. Here I must admit that I was writing not as a historian but as a literary critic of the biographical school. I took up the plays at their chronological place in Sri Aurobindo life, summarized them, and then tried to present what I found interesting in them. (Again, "I" is the author of the book, not me personally. I really enjoy reading these plays – I have read each of them a half dozen times – and while I do not think they are among Sri Aurobindo's greatest poetic creations, they certainly are of considerable interest.)
But in discussing them in a scholarly biography, there is a problem. All the plays are based on a literary model that was long out of fashion when Sri Aurobindo wrote them and is even more out of fashion now. It thus is difficult to discuss them as contributions to the field of English literature. What I found interesting in the plays is the activity of Sri Aurobindo's poetic imagination that finds expression in them. I also was struck by the fact that Sri Aurobindo wrote several of his plays when he had a week or two free while otherwise engaged in political action. (I bring this out in the book.) Why, I asked myself, did Sri Aurobindo write these plays? It seemed to me (thinking, as I have said, not as a psychologist or a historian, but as literary critic of the biographical school) that the creation of these plays, so unrelated to Sri Aurobindo's current outward activities, had something to do with the imaginative impulses of his higher vital and psychic beings. Here, obviously, I was straying beyond history properly speaking into speculative literary criticism. Some of your points you raise in regard to my presentation from the point of view of scientific psychology are well taken.
In a way I regret these brief detours (each only a sentence or two long) from my biographical narrative into speculative criticism. Still, I felt while writing that that I had to make this attempt to probe into the mystery of Sri Aurobindo's creative personality, and these inadequate passages were the result. Peter Heehs

No doubt, hatred and cursing are not the proper attitude. It is true also that to look upon all things and all people with a calm and clear vision, to be uninvolved and impartial in one's judgments is a quite proper yogic attitude. A condition of perfect samata can be established in which one sees all as equal, friends and enemies included, and is not disturbed by what men do or by what happens. The question is whether this is all that is demanded from us. If so, then the general attitude will be of a neutral indifference to everything. But the Gita, which strongly insists on a perfect and absolute samata, goes on to say, “Fight, destroy the adversary, conquer.” If there is no kind of general action wanted, no loyalty to Truth as against Falsehood except for one's personal sadhana, no will for the Truth to conquer, then the samata of indifference will suffice.
But here there is a work to be done, a Truth to be established against which immense forces are arranged, invisible forces which can use visible things and persons and actions for their instruments. If one is among the disciples, the seekers of this Truth, one has to take sides for the Truth, to stand against the forces that attack it and seek to stifle it.
Arjuna wanted not to stand for either side, to refuse any action of hostility even against assailants; Sri Krishna, who insisted so much on samata, strongly rebuked his attitude and insisted equally on his fighting the adversary. “Have samata,” he said, “and seeing clearly the Truth, fight.” Therefore to take sides with the Truth and to refuse to concede anything to the Falsehood that attacks, to be unflinchingly loyal and against the hostiles and the attackers, is not inconsistent with equality. It is personal and egoistic feeling that has to be thrown away; hatred and vital ill-will have to be rejected. But loyalty and refusal to compromise with the assailants and the hostiles or to dally with their ideas and demands and say, “After all, we can compromise with what they ask from us”, or to accept them as companions and our own people—these things have a great importance. If the attack were a physical menace to the work and the leaders and doers of the work, one would see this at once. But because the attack is of a subtler kind, can a passive attitude be right? It is a spiritual battle inward and outward; by neutrality and compromise or even passivity one may allow the enemy forces to pass and crush down the Truth and its children. If you look at it from this point, you will see that if the inner spiritual equality is right, the active loyalty and firm taking of sides is as right, and the two cannot be incompatible.
